"Social positivism only accepts duties, for all and towards all. Its constant social viewpoint cannot include any notion of rights, for such notion always rests on individuality."

Altruism is an attitude and behavior which seeks to fulfil the moral quality of being interested in the well-being of fellow men, as well as animals, over oneself. This concept has been applied to fields of biology, psychology, sociology, anthropology, and most importantly philosophy. Altruism is often put up against it's contradictory attitude, commonly postulated to be Egoism.

In general, this term expresses the interest shown in well-being pursuit, both in the sense of survival chances and quality of life, of members of one's own species and even of other species. On a social level, Altruism is often seen as a clearly positive personal quality, because it indirectly improves collective chances of survival and well-being.

    Notes[edit | edit source]

    1. Altruism as a personality trait can be combined with different moral theories ( Deontology, Virtue Ethics etc.). However, philosophical altruism is usually viewed as a form of Consequentialism.
    2. Auguste Comte coined and spread the term Altruisme.
