Hylozoism is a philosophical concept that all matter is alive, and movement is immanent to matter.
History[edit | edit source]
Hylozoism was inspired by proto-philosophical beliefs of animism. It was originated by Thales of Miletus, in his claim "everything is animated, as we can see it in amber and magnet". Other philosophers advocating for Hylozoism were the rest Milesian School members, Anaximander and Anaximenes and Heraclitus, Leucippus and Democritus.
Pythagoreans, Empedocles and Anaxagoras opposed hylozoism, but this tendency returned through Epicureanism and later Giordano Bruno, and contemporary philosopher Pierre de Chardin.
